The first one was done in dip pen and ink with watercolors. While the second one was outlined in black colored pencil. I think this particular composition worked better with the pen and ink.
I think I agree but I do like both of them. What I liked about the little pirate and capture were the difference in value between the pencil marks. I don't know whether you have tried it (or whether it is a good idea) but you could dilute your ink to make two or three different values for your outlines. Then you would have much the same style and you wouldn't miss using your ink.

They're both great, but I like the lighting on the second one (pencil). And I hadn't heard of diluting the ink for line art (Lesley) worth a try!
